WINNERS

The 4th Annual New Hampshire Film Expo was held for the first time in Portsmouth, NH, the town welcomed filmmakers and festivalgoers, much to their delight. On Sunday night, October 17th, NHFX presented Alfred Thomas Catalfo with the 2004 NHFX Best Screenplay Award for his script entitled "Mall Cop"! In a touching acceptance speech, Alfred graciously donated the $500 cash prize back to NHFX. The surprised and extremely thankful NHFX Directors accepted the gift in traditional group-hug style! Congratulations to both NHFX and to Freddie!
All NHFX award winners received what's become affectionately known as the "Granny." The Granny is a heavy brick of granite sourced from a NH quarry, engraved with the award's title and affixed with a plaque commemorating the winning film. For this year's Granite State Filmmaker Award, the Granny was not a granite brick, but a piece of granite carved into the shape of the state of New Hampshire! Here are the film competition results:
Best Feature, THE AMAZING FLOYDINI; Best Short Drama, RAFTMAN’S RAZOR; Best Short Comedy, THUNDER ROAD; Best Documentary, SHOOT THE MOON; Best Animation, FLYAWAY; Best Student Work, SUPER 7; Granite State Filmmaker Award, THE NEW VOICE OF FENWAY PARK.
Congratulations to everyone at NHFX!

| Kat Tatlock and Dr. Kasia Clark goof off after a “Kasia Project” shoot at the Hudson River Community Health Clinic where Kasia has served for years. | Crew on location of “Culinary U” food seriespilot Kat produced and directed last year for TV personality and show host Merrell Waring (2nd from left). Master stylist and segment guest, John Carafoli (far left), Kat and LD/Camera Ed Marcotti flank Merrell. DP Lance Douglas and stylist Geraldine Craig (back row center). |
Tatlock will produce and direct the Stephen D. Paine Scholarship Film sponsored by the Boston Art Dealers Association to commemorate the late Stephen Paine, collector and supporter of contemporary Boston art. The film celebrates the 5th anniversary of the scholarship, which awards exceptional students entering their 4th year of art school, and hopes to inspire contributors to enrich the awards. Featured in the film are museum directors and curators, Susan Paine, BADA’s Scholarship founders, and past awardees Alicia, Kelly and Sara Casilio, who use their triplet identity to create provocative performance art and mural painting, and George Dobrentey, whose videography on this project reflects his keen photographic eye.

As Co-Producer of “The Kasia Project…a life in the making,” Kat joins this compelling documentary team of Richard Gönci and Dr. Katherine “Kasia” Clark, the film’s subject. This dramatic story is not only about Kasia, whose diagnosis of Stage 3-C ovarian cancer catapulted her into a physical and emotional reinvention of her life; it is about us. The film chronicles a woman’s imperative to “leap from cliffs” in order to turn a death sentence into a fully realized life. As Kasia challenges cancer, she pushes her physical fitness to tri-athletic competition, her love of music to performing in a world-class string quartet, and her dedication to healing to making a film that could reach not only those facing medical crises, but all who yearn to live life to the fullest.
Kat Tatlock also serves as Creative Consultant on “Utrillo’s Mother,” a feature film written by friend and sister-WIFV/NE member, Rebecca Richards. The story of post-Impressionist painter Suzanne Valadon is as dicey and dramatic as that of any contemporary woman of grit and gift. Making her mark in the art world of Parisian bohemia and conservatism circa mid-to-late 1800s, Valadon prevails over poverty, heartache, sexism and the struggle to raise her gifted alcoholic son, Maurice Utrillo, who would eventually eclipse her as a painter, but never as an artist and fighter.

Sennheiser Corp., Lyme, CT, Drives Peter Jackson’s KING KONG
Oscar-winning Sound Mixer, Hammond Peek, has chosen the HHB Portatdrive, hardware that is exclusively distributed in North and South America by Sennheiser Corporation of Lyme, Connecticut, for location sound recording on Director Peter Jackson’s KING KONG. The film, a remake of the 1933 classic, commenced shooting in New Zealand in September 2004.
Sound Mixer, Hammond Peek, who has worked alongside Jackson on five features since 1994, won an Academy Award for his work on the last of the three LORD OF THE RINGS trilogy, RETURN OF THE KING. Says, “The HHB Portadrive is the obvious choice.”
"Solid build, eight-track flexibility and reliable hard disk recording made Portadrive the recorder of choice for KING KONG,” reports Stephen Buckland, director of Sound Techniques, New Zealand’s distributor for HHB. "The Portadrive excelled in trials to check compatibility with post-production workflow, a very important consideration for the production."
Jackson has said that recreating KING KONG will fulfill a childhood dream, whose original black and white movie inspired him to become a filmmaker.
While Peek’s choice is a monumental coup for HHB, KING KONG is the latest in a series of high-profile productions underway around the world in which HHB's groundbreaking portable HD recorder lies at the heart of the audio acquisition process.
Sennheiser Electronic Corporation distributes HHB products exclusively in the United States, Mexico, Central and South America and the Caribbean. .
