The Harvard Film Archive and the Goethe Institut Boston present: Young Turks of the German Cinema

February 20 -25, 2004

This unusual series includes a generous sampling of bitter, fresh, zany, and touching films from a "new wave" of contemporary Turkish-German directors. These young men and women question their identities and their sense of belonging as they move between Germany and Turkey, challenging the culture of their parents, creating road movies of alienation, and dealing with sexual discovery. Over the last thirty years, the Turkish diaspora has grown to more than two and a half million people in Germany. It is a community that has established a dynamic ethnic and urban presence and formed a curious and exciting blend of cultural identities. Showcasing their assimilation in a flurry of documentaries, shorts, and feature films, this new generation of Turkish-Germans has migrated once again: this time within the artistic landscape, using new visual tools to shape their identities as part of a new culture and new generation. Introduced by HFA Conservator Julie Buck. .For film schedule : www.harvardfilmarchive.org/calendars/03_winter/turks.html

IN SHORT: ROSSELLINI, GODARD, TRUFFAUT, CLAIR, POLANSKI, LESTER

February 29 (Sunday) 7 pm

The short format has been the entry point for many important directors, yet short films-unlike short stories in literature-are rarely given public exposure, lucky to be consigned to the end of a DVD or screened as part of a directorial retrospective. During the 1950s and 60s short films were often released as anthologies, or "omnibus films." Rossellini's "THE CHICKEN," starring Ingrid Bergman, for instance, was part of a larger film about the everyday lives of actresses in Italy. Drawing on the many short films held in the HFA collection, this program features mature works, like Rossellini's and a late film by René Clair, as well as the earliest of works of directors like Godard, Truffaut, Polanski, and Richard Lester, which provide interesting hints of the styles and subjects these directors would later embrace in long form.

You'll see THE CHICKEN Directed by Roberto Rossellini, ALL THE BOYS ARE CALLED PATRICK Directed by Jean-Luc Godard, THE BRATS (LES MISTONS)
Directed by Francois Truffaut, TWO PIGEONS Directed by Rene Clair, TWO MEN AND A WARDROBE (DWAJ LUDZIE Z SZAFA) Directed by Roman Polanski, THE RUNNING, JUMPING, STANDING STILL FILM Directed by Richard Lester.
