WORKS

Viewpoint Creative Develops Promotional Campaign for Discovery Channel's "Rameses: Wrath of God or Man?"

Discovery Channel once again teams up with Viewpoint Creative to develop and produce the promotional package for their newest special presentation "Rameses: Wrath of God or Man?" This is the latest in a

yearlong series of advertising and promotional projects that Viewpoint Creative has done for the network. Others include "Nefertiti Resurrected" and "Columbus: Secrets from the Grave". Each special features exciting archeological discoveries and modern forensic technology that, together, reshape the way we look at history.

Viewpoint Creative's Joseph Kiely (Creative Director, Design) comments, "Each of these projects has involved a wonderful creative partnership between Viewpoint Creative and the Discovery on-air and marketing team and Rameses is no exception. Our approach was to begin epic, ushering the viewer into the world of the great Egyptian Pharaoh then to pull the rug out revealing this fantastic murder mystery lurking below the surface. And we wanted to do it in a contemporary way that modern audiences can relate to."

Working closely with Discovery, Viewpoint's creative team fleshed out the concept and production design. Viewpoint Director, Patrick Kiely, filmed the project in Los Angeles. Editorial, composite and soundtrack were completed in Boston. The final campaign includes TV spots, on-air teases and radio. "Rameses: Wrath of God…or Man?" will air in December.

WRINKLES

Coolidge Corner Theatre Premieres HOLY WATER-GATE: ABUSE COVER-UP IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH

It's only the subject that qualifies, as a "wrinkle" in the fabric of our society and certainly examination is required, if not a little "ironing it out."

HOLY WATER-GATE: ABUSE COVER-UP IN THE CATHOLIC CHURCH will screen at the Coolidge Theater on Monday, January 10th, 2005 at 7:30pm for its Boston debut. This powerful film presents untold stories reflecting the many facets of the scandal; and inside sources reveal the astonishing efforts of the church hierarchy to keep it concealed. Exposing how those in power have protected offenders and not victims, HOLY WATER-GATE draws from personal confessions to conduct a thorough and dramatic investigation. "With swift, deft scalpel strokes, the film lays bare hypocrisy and institutionalized abuse in the Catholic Church. The film shows this graphically, but also that humble, decent priests still do Christ's work at grassroots level, and that some even risk everything to fight the snakes in their hierarchy." -Michael Rabiger, Author, Filmmaker and recipient of the IDA Distinguished Documentary Achievement Award

Director Mary Healey-Conlon (Providence) and co-producer Louise Rosen (Boston) will attend the premiere, with Q&A to follow the one-hour documentary. Healey-Conlon, an Emerson College alumnus, is a professor of communications and film studies at URI, as well as owner and principal of C Videofilms in Warren, RI. Gathering interviews and archive from across the US, Healey-Conlon worked on the film for over five years. Documenting the lengths to which sexual abuse has been systematically obscured throughout the nation, the film presents testimony from an admitted priest perpetrator, church officials and victims. This is her first full-length film project.

Co-producer Louise Rosen (see IMAGINE cover story October 2001), a veteran international film and television distributor, has sold HOLY WATER-GATE to television channels in Australia, Canada, Switzerland, Spain and Denmark. Negotiations are underway for French, German and US broadcast, and the film is expected to see wide educational distribution throughout North America.

THE HUMAN RIGHTS WATCH INTERNATIONAL FILM FESTIVAL

Now in its fifth year in Boston, the Human Rights Watch International Film Festival (HRWIFF) returns this January 27-31 to the Museum of Fine Arts and the Coolidge Corner Movie Theatre, bringing its mix of challenging and provocative documentary and dramatic films on human rights issues (more wrinkles) around the world. From February 1-3, the Coolidge Corner Movie Theatre will offer rollover screenings of several of the festival's most popular films in the Video Screening Room.

This year the Festival showcases a dozen titles, many focusing on the justice system here and abroad and conflicts, which turn family and friends into strangers and enemies, particularly when borders and personal identity get in the way.

Highlights of this year's festival include the Opening Night BORN INTO BROTHELS which follows the lives of children born to Bombay's sex workers; JUVIES which introduces the audience into the world of juvenile offenders and the failure of the justice system to protect them, narrated by Dorchester, MA native, Mark Wahlberg; a Catholic gay marriage in SAINTS AND SINNERS; political corruption in the Peruvian WHAT THE EYE DOESN'T SEE; and a mother's fears as her Islamic son turns militant in SILENT WATERS.

The festival closes with a special reprise of THREE KINGS, whose images of the first Gulf War speak closely to events happening today.

For more information on the films, ticket prices and show times, visit the HRWIFF website at www.hrw.org/iff Information for individual venues can be found by contacting the Coolidge Corner Theatre at 617 734-2500 and www.coolidge.org and the Museum of Fine Arts at 617 369-3306 and www.mfa.org/film

FENCES AND FINGERNAILS

Garth Donovan is completing post-production of his latest fictional feature project, FENCES AND FINGERNAILS (formerly titled SAMANTHA). The premiere screening is January 7, 2005, at the Belmont Studio Cinemas, at 8 pm. It's a story about a young high school female hockey star athlete who finds the pressure of family; school, sports, and life begin to tear her apart. You can check out the trailer at www.garthdonovan.net.

SPAGHETTI AND MATZO BALLS

Dave Lewis is wrapping up his latest comedy short, SPAGHETTI AND MATZO BALLS, with music composer John Kusiak (FOG OF WAR) on board to finish the score. The movie expects to finish postproduction in early 2005 with a prospective premiere in February. The film, shot on 35 mm by Emmy winning D.P. Will Barrett, will be just under 20 minutes when completed. Over a year in the making, Lewis said the Maven Productions' short morphed out of a feature script he is still completing. As producer, along with Yankee Classic Pictures' J.P. Ouellette, Lewis plans to use this as a springboard to attract financing to the feature length movie, which he will direct, and to get recognition in film festivals. "The film stands on it's own," Lewis said, "basically it's the first 15 minutes of the feature with some additions to frame a stand-alone story. It's coming along great."

AUTOMATIC DRIP

Judy Laster's latest project, the comedy short AUTOMATIC DRIP, premiered to an audience at The Northampton Film Festival in October. November was the Woods Hole Premiere at The Captain Kidd Restaurant to a party of cast and crew and well wishers. Starring local actors Vincent Myette, Garth Donovan and Sean Boyce, Laster's film takes viewers on a quirky ride of coffee addiction and the mess it can create. Zombies and shark slippers highlight the madness. A catchy original score rounds out this film short.
