The MFA Film Program is pleased to show engagements of a diverse selection of international independent films, as well as several exciting film series and special events.
In September, we have programmed 3 engagements. We will begin September with 2 films from July’s Boston French Film Festival: CET AMOUR-LÀ (Sept. 3-11) and MY LIFE ON ICE (Sept. 4-12). At the end of the month, we will have the area engagement of German-Turkish director Fatih Akin’s latest film In July (Sept. 26-Oct. 12).
The MFA will also bring back several indie hits from the past year. Once again we will show Alexandr Sokurov’s RUSSIAN ARK, Sept. 4-7, and RIVERS AND TIDES: ANDY GOLDSWORTHY WORKING WITH TIME, Sept. 13-Oct. 2.
On September 10, we kick off Susan Sontag’s Favorite Japanese Films. Susan Sontag will be present to introduce the opening night film, SISTERS OF GION, on September 10 at 5:30 pm. Through September 27 we will show 7 more classic Japanese films selected by Ms. Sontag.
As part of our ongoing New England Film Artists Present series, we will show 4 locally produced films: Judith Wechsler’s RACHEL Sept. 24 & Oct. 5; Mark Lipman’s FATHER’S DAY Sept. 24 & Oct. 5; plus encore screenings of Laurel Chiten’s TOUCHED and THE JEW IN THE LOTUS on Sept. 10.
Finally, we have 2 special film events:
Sept. 19: The film BLACK FLOWERS followed by a performance by AvanTango and Hector Falcon. And a premiere presentation of the documentary FARTHER THAN THE EYE CAN SEE on September 25 with subject Erik Weihenmayer present.
And don’t forget the conclusion of our Aki Kaurismäki series, which runs through September 27. Highlights include: TAKE CARE OF YOUR SCARF, TATIANA, Sept. 17 & 20; and JUHA, Sept. 25 & 27.
